So you want to remodel or renovate your space but you don't know where to start? This can be a daunting task. I had the same feeling when I started this "blog". To be honest, I am better at project managing and designing than I am blogging, but just like anything, we have to start somewhere. I was thinking about my clients and when I ask them what their budget is for their renovation. I almost always get "I don't have one", "I don't know", or some unrealistic number that is too low for what they want. I know it isn't because they are cheap or have not thought about it, it's because people generally don't know how much labor, materials, and products cost. In order to help my clients or potential clients, I have created an Investment Guide to help you understand pricing for various aspects of a renovation. As a general rule, I like to aim high and go down from there. I saw this quote and thought it was fitting and something to think "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten." Here are a few tips for finding the costs of materials...unfortunately, there will be a bit of math involved, but not much. Consider how much you want to spend per square foot for your flooring or tile. To find the square footage of your room, use a tape measure to determine the room's length and width. Then multiply the length by the width to get your square footage. For instance, if the room is 12 feet wide and 12 feet long, you will need enough flooring for 144 square feet (12×12=144). $6/square foot for 144 square feet of tile would be around $1,000 with tax. A bag of grout would be about $40. A 25-pound bag of dry grouting compound, when mixed with water, usually is sufficient to grout around 200 square feet of typical 4 1/4-inch square ceramic tile that is 1/4 inch thick, with 1/8-inch grout lines.
